Tabledown is a minimalist VTT (Virtual TableTop) that uses Markdown to edit the shared sheets, which means you can create and edit sheets just like you would in a text document, no need for special knowledge to handle them.

Features

Although the focus for Tabledown is to be small and simple we can list quite a few reasons to use it:

  • Markdown Sheets: As mentioned before, the sheets are simply Markdown files, so it's easy to create and edit just like a document;
  • Mobile Friendly: Everything here is made from the ground up thinking about its usage on mobile, so it is a very responsive interface;
  • Custom Style: Every game room can be customized so the app colors and text fonts vibe with the story you're running;
  • Everything is Temporary: We don't request logins or any sort of authentication, the user information is stored locally in your browser, rooms are deleted after 24 hours of inactivity (you can export the room data and import it again later to continue your games), so it's as quick as creating a room and sending the link to your friends;
  • PWA: This webapp is a PWA which means you can open it in your mobile browser and go to settings to "install app"/"add to home screen" and it'll be installed in your device, making it much faster since you won't be needing to download the pages (This won't work through Itch.io, you must open the main webapp website);
  • Privacy First: You see that cookies banner in the first page? No? Well, yeah, we don't collect sh*t;
  • Other Small Things: I won't mention everything here but you can of course expect the normal stuff like dice roller, chat and map with grid and tokens (although this last one is not really the focus);

Open Source

The whole project is written in pure vanilla HTML, CSS and JS, no frameworks and no libraries all to ensure we could optimize the most minimal decisions to make it super lightweight and fast, this thing can run in a potato and you can even host a server yourself since it's open source and aGPL 3.0 licensed.

I plan on making a self-hosting guide in the future but for now we have a minimal guide on self-hosting inside the README in the repository.

Still In Development

This platform has been around for 3 years being used only by me and my close friends so now I decided to open up to more people to use so I'll have more people to get feedback from, so obviously many things can change along the way, so please be patient.

Human Made

Tabledown has been around for 3 years, being only a personal project until then but still it predates this BS "agentic era" we live in right now. Even if it existed before I absolutely despise these tools and plan on continuing supporting this project with human written code only.
